Fort Hamilton high school News and Information - May 1, 2022

Dear Parents/Guardians:

It was wonderful to be back together at Fort Hamilton after spring break. A busy final week of April at Fort, as always, and we send holiday wishes for all celebrating Eid. Classes resume Tuesday, May 3rd.  Best wishes for a wonderful 3-day Spring weekend.

I colored the front of my hair blue on April 14th to motivate the goal of 50% parent completion on the 2022 Learning Survey.  Completion reached 24%, so no full head of blue hair, but students were sweet and curious up through the deadline.   Open to ideas for more principal challenges in the future.  Thanks to everyone who provided the survey feedback.  A big shout-out to our Social Studies teachers for administering the survey to students.  Inconsistency with wifi created challenges, but team effort to reach 58%.  Feedback is important, and the immediate feedback that our students give us day-to-day is most valuable to help us guide them.

ReadAloud Day was celebrated in our library on Wednesday, April 27th.  Many students and staff members participated in celebrating the written/spoken word.  Thank you to our Library staff for coordinating this beloved event – 30th year at Fort Hamilton.

On Thursday, April 28, 2022, the Muslim Student Association, with staff leadership across departments, organized a community celebration to break the Ramadan fast.  This evening event was open to the entire FHHS community.  We thank all who participated.

Teachers will be completing the second DESSA survey around Social Emotional Learning (SEL) in May.  We’ve been conducting explicit lessons on the SEL competencies that scored the lowest from the Fall DESSA (self-awareness, social awareness, decision making, and optimistic thinking). We have a committed team of educators working hard to address SEL more intently than ever. No action is required on student or parent part, but if you have questions about the DESSA survey, please speak with your child’s counselor.

Administration of the multi-modality NYSESLAT exam to our ENL students continues.  Please contact Ms. Kitchen, AP WL/ENL,  with any questions or concerns. Teachers across the department, as well as ISS teachers of ENL, are testing throughout the day with patience and clarity.

Advanced Placement Exam administration will take place between May 3-20, 2022.  Students will be excused from classes the day of an exam.  However, students will be marked absent from the classes they miss and Attendance will be reversed centrally.

MP2 ends on Friday, May 6.  Report cards will be available on Tuesday, May 17, 2022.

The SYEP application deadline has been extended to May 6, 2022.  SYEP staff will be available in the library today, 4/29, and Tuesday, 5/3, from 10am to 2pm, to assist students in completing their application and the uploading of documents.  If you have any questions, please contact our Parent Coordinator, Gabriella Ruales
